Board Bios
Ahmed Desouki was born in Giza, Egypt but unfortunately, is not a pharaoh. Not yet, at least. He was, however, raised for pretty much his entire life in San Jose, California where he grew up with a strong Muslim community at the MCA in Santa Clara.
Currently, Ahmed is a 5th-year Biotechnology major and Education minor at UC Davis. He hopes to get into pathology research but desires to eventually teach biotechnology in high school.
Other than MSA West, Ahmed sits on the board of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at UC Davis and is president of the Arab Cultural Club at UC Davis. Off-campus at the Islamic Center of Davis, he hosts a Friday night halaqa (group) with 9-13 year-olds and on Sundays, he teaches Arabic, Qur'an and Islamic studies at the Sunday school.
On his free time, he loves to cook, sketch and root for his Bay Area teams (which for every team besides the SF Giants, involves a lot of shame and heartbreak).
When he's not busy, Ahmed likes to play and watch sports (most notably, the Bay Area teams), read, write and quote Friends, the best TV show ever (although he tends to do that even when he is busy).

Daniah was born and raised in San Jose, California and also grew up with a strong Muslim community with the MCA right in her backyard.

Meryem Kamil is a third year student at UC San Diego. She is double-majoring in Ethnic Studies and Political Science/International Relations with a minor in Spanish Literature.
Her previous involvement includes serving on board for Students for Justice in Palestine, acting as amira of the MSA's high school conference, and working with the UCSD Divestment Task Force for two years. She is also a Diversity Peer Educator at the UCSD Cross Cultural Center.
In her free time, Meryem likes to watch hockey, strum poorly on her guitar, write poetry, and apply race theory to every conversation she has. She hopes to one day save the world, insha'Allah.
Amani Jadallah was born and raised in Riverside, California. Currently, Amani is a 5th year Legal Studies major at UC Berkeley. She hopes to get her Masters in Public Policy. She also has plans to do volunteer work in Palestine, insha'Allah. Amani loves working with children and intends to eventually become a teacher.
Other than MSA West, Amani also serves on the UC Berkeley MSA Board as the Dawah Coordinator. She is very passionate about being involved in the Muslim community in the Bay Area and loves Northern California (sorry, Socal).
In her spare time, Amani loves to bike, play soccer for fun, and visit her baby cousins who are so adorable, masha'Allah!
Huma Waseem is a first-generation Pakistani immigrant entering her third year as an International Studies major (with a focus on Sociology, History and the Middle East) at UC San Diego. She has been interested in race relations in the United States as well as global politics since the day an American high school first turned her idea of reality on its head. In addition to being active in the Muslim Student Association and the Students for Justice in Palestine chapters on campus, Huma has been involved in the social justice movement that found expression in protests over the past two years at UCSD and was a summer intern at the San Diego chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
When she is not busy consuming equally unhealthy amounts of news/political analysis and caffeine, Huma likes to vent her anger at the world through writing and performing Spoken Word poetry. She hopes to serve marginalized communities and continue her role in the fight for global justice once she has finished her formal education.
Layla Jalanbo is a third year at Cal Poly Pomona, double majoring in Apparel Merchandising & Management as well as Islamic Sciences with Arees University. She grew up in Corona, California and has been active with the Islamic Society of Corona Norco for years. Layla served as the president of the MSA and as the Student Representative on the Library Advisory Committee at Riverside Community College. On her Friday nights, she is a youth group mentor for high school girls at the Islamic Institute of Orange County. She also volunteers for Al Maghrib Institute and various youth camps and organizations around SoCal. She dreams of seeking Islamic knowledge abroad, designing abayas, and opening a bakery. In her spare time, Layla loves bike riding with friends, baking, and studying the Holy Quran.
Amir Khan is studying Biotechnology with a minor in Chemistry at California Polytechnic University, Pomona. He gives back to his (absolutely awesome!) university by serving on the Muslim Student Association as well as the MultiCultural Council and aims towards increasing student activism.
Raised in Corona, CA he has become an active volunteer at the Islamic Society of Corona-Norco. During his free time he can be found doodling around on Photoshop, redditing, or volunteering in the local community.
