Haidar Ali Anwar Born and raised in the small Muslim community of Merced, California, Haidar was not exposed to the dealings of the world outside of his bubble. Coming into UCLA opened up many doors for him, one being the Muslim Student Association. Being a 3rd year, active member of the UCLA MSA allowed Haidar to grow as a person and gain a deeper understanding of Islam. Developing a passion for civic activism, Haidar strove to represent the Muslim community in the best manner possible. He was inspired to reach out to Muslim Student Associations beyond the local level, and become part of a movement uniting Muslim students all over the West Coast. This encourages Haidar in working to support others, displaying Islam in a positive light, and maintaining well-defined relations with his non-Muslim brothers and sisters in humanity. Haidar's hobbies include: Community Service, Reading Fiction, Spending Time with Family & Friends, Networking, Watching Movies, Pulling Pranks, and Traveling the World |

Aliyah Mohammed Aliyah Mohammed is an aspiring journalist and passionate advocate for civil rights and social justice. Aliyah decided she wanted to be a journalist when she was 11-years-old, when she realized there was a decided lack of Muslim representation in the media shortly after 9/11 and has been on the same track since then, Alhamdulillah. At De Anza College, Aliyah started off as a reporter for “La Voz Weekly” before becoming Deputy Editor and then Managing Editor of the paper. She was also involved in organizing with Students for Justice, the MSA and other campus organizations. Aliyah was a Media Relations Intern at CAIR for two summers-- a counselor to students attending the Muslim Youth Leadership Program in Sacramento each year--as well as interning most recently at the Post Papers and NBC Bay Area. Aliyah transferred to U.C. Berkeley in fall 2011 and is now an incoming Senior Media Studies and English double major. She is a news reporter with Berkeley’s newspaper “the Daily Californian” and has the pleasure of writing on a wide range of topics that affect Berkeley students and the greater comumunity. She is also a huge soccer fan, and dreams of one day seeing a Manchester United match at Old Trafford Stadium. Aliyah is a an outspoken proponent of women’s rights, civil rights, justice in minority communities, and in particular advocating for a shift to fair trade products to abolish modern day slavery. Aliyah is a coffee, adrenaline, the show "Castle," and old book collecting junkie. If she wasn't going to be a journalist she would be the awesomest F.B.I. agent you have never heard of. |
